As we continue through the book of Jonah we see these three key things:
- God’s call remains
- God’s grace restores
- God’s plan is revival
Whilst we naturally want to serve ourselves, and the trinity of me, myself and I, God continually reminds us of who he is and his plan for humanity. It is worth asking do you really want to have your way? Or would you rather find out what God’s will for you life is?
In chapter 3 of Jonah the fish has vomited Jonah exactly where he was supposed to go in the first place – right at Ninevah. Here, again he hears the exact same message from God:
Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time: “Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the message I give you.”
(Jonah 3:1-2)
God didn’t ask Jonah to do anything different, or offer him another option. Jonah was probably expecting God to say something else now, after the experience he’d just been through. However, God’s call remains. The city of Ninevah might not be looking for God yet but God had the city in his heart. His grace brings restoration to the city through Jonah, finally obeying the call of God.
God is reaching those who don’t even seem to be looking for him.
REVIVAL happens when God shows up to do what only he can do. It is at this point those that were dead are brought to life.
