01.08.17 – Vision Sunday January 2017

What is the mandate from God for Port Church to be here?
Habbakukk 2:2.  And the LORD answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it. (KJV)
This version of the verse talks about making the vision so plain that someone can see it as they’re running past, similarly to how we can drive past a sign on the highway at speed but still clearly see it, read it and know it.
In Acts 2:42 we see the early church beginning.  The first thing that they did after they encountered God was to devote themselves.  You can have a great vision but unless you’re devoted to it it probably won’t happen.  The devotion comes from God doing a work inside of us.  God is the initiator of everything, and we are asked to live in response to what God has done in us.
So first the people in the early church had a heart change, in response to the Gospel. Then came devotion.  It wasn’t just about what they did – it was that their vision and mission was who they were.
What were they devoted to in the early church?
There were four things they were devoted to:
  1). Apostles teaching
  2). Fellowship
  3). Breaking of bread
  4). Prayer
How we live this out is through our CONFESSION, COMMUNITY & COMMISSION.
